2017 Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race presented by First National Bank Postponed
A trail run series will be held this summer as a fundraiser for the Friends of the Riverfront
PITTSBURGH – P3R and Friends of the Riverfront announced today that the 2017 Pittsburgh Triathlon and Adventure Race presented by First National Bank will be postponed due to road construction on the HOV lanes. The event, which was scheduled for Aug. 12-13, is anticipated to return when the HOV lane construction is complete.
After careful consideration, months of planning and evaluating alternatives, Friends of the Riverfront and P3R determined that the costs of shutting down city roads for the two day event, a necessary requirement to substitute for the closed HOV lanes, would be financially prohibitive for both non-profit organizations.
“The Triathlon symbolizes strength and persistence, and it is precisely those attributes that pushed our communities to take back our beautiful rivers and create a trail system that is the envy of many cities,” said Stacey Vernallis, President of the Board of Directors for Friends of the Riverfront. “While the Triathlon must be put on hiatus, Friends of the Riverfront continues its mission of providing our friends, families and neighbors safe, beautiful trails and river access. We need your support now more than ever. Do the ‘burg thing. Give generously. Check out our website www.FriendsoftheRiverfront.org and give.”
Anyone currently registered for the 2017 Pittsburgh Triathlon and Adventure Race will receive a full refund within 10 days. Athletes who want to support the Three Rivers Heritage Trail system are invited to attend a trail run later this summer that will benefit Friends of the Riverfront. Additional details will be announced at a later date.
The Pittsburgh Triathlon was created by Friends of the Riverfront in 1988 as a fundraising event that showcases recreational use of the rivers and trails. The event has featured a swim and kayak portion in the Allegheny River, a bike course on the HOV lanes and a final run course on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
P3R, the event management company of the 2016 Pittsburgh Triathlon, will be hosting a trail run for Friends of the Riverfront in an effort to generate the funding necessary for trail maintenance and development.
