Please join us at one of our upcoming Trail Cares! \n\n\nJoin Friends of the Riverfront and Allegheny CleanWays along the Chartiers Creek tributary section of the Three Rivers Water Trail for a river-based Water Trail Care opportunity!\n\n\nVolunteers will:\n\n 	Launch from Caliente Pizza in Crafton and paddle ~5 miles downstream along Chartiers Creek ending in Esplen\n 	Collect litter along the way\, stopping on the riverbanks where we can\n\n\nRegistration is limited to 12 participants; if you have your own vessel (kayak or canoe)\, we encourage you to bring it. Participants that do not have their own will get a seat in the Friends fleet in either a kayak or canoe. The paddle will take between 3-3.5 hours to complete (~1.5 miles per hour). Previous paddling experience required. We encourage you to join us at one of our upcoming Train on the Trail or Trail Care events!\n\n\nJoin Friends of the Riverfront for another Train on the Water Trail session and explore the Allegheny River!  \n\nPenn State Extension’s Master Watershed Steward Program will lead an in-person education session where participants will learn about the importance of our riparian areas and watersheds and the role they play\, followed by a short paddle along the Allegheny River at the Three Rivers Water Trail Launch in Springdale\, PA. Participants with their own kayak or canoes are encouraged to bring them; Friends will provide seats in one of our kayaks or canoes for those that do not have their own! Registration will be limited. \n\nThe 2026 Train on the Trail series offers enrichment opportunities for volunteers and trail users to gain introductory knowledge and skills that will benefit their trail experience\, including identifying native and invasive plants\, watercraft safety\, tree identification\, and more! \n\nAn email will be sent the day before the event with details. SUMMARY:Train on the Trail - Aquatic Species & River Health
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Riverfront for a special Train on the Water Trail program and explore Plum Creek!  \n\nCreek Connections will be sharing their knowledge of freshwater ecosystems and demonstrate how aquatic species monitoring helps inform conservation and restoration efforts throughout the region. Participants will learn how scientists\, educators\, and conservationists use aquatic insects\, fish\, and other freshwater organisms as indicators of water quality. Through hands-on exploration and guided discussion\, we’ll discover the connections between aquatic species\, habitat conditions\, and the overall health of our watershed. \n\nIf you want to participate in the in-creek activities\, please wear closed-toe shoes that stay securely on your feet and that you do not mind getting wet. Shoes should provide adequate protection and traction for walking and wading on the creek bottom. Sandals\, flip-flops\, and other loose-fitting footwear are not recommended. Monitor the forecast and dress for the weather. Bring a reusable water bottle\, water refills will be available. All other program supplies and equipment will be provided. \n\nThe 2026 Train on the Trail series offers enrichment opportunities for volunteers and trail users to gain introductory knowledge and skills that will benefit their trail experience\, including water quality awareness\, heritage and history of the three rivers\, bird identification\, and more! \n\nAn email will be sent the day before the event with details. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Tarentum Launch on the Allegheny River section of the Three Rivers Water & Heritage Trail for a land and river-based Trail Care opportunity!\n\n\nLearn about Tarentum’s trail development and future connections from our Trail Development Project Manager from 9:00-9:30am followed by a litter cleanup!\n\n\n\nVolunteers will split into two groups both starting at the Tarentum launch:\n	Land based – walk along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and surrounding areas collecting litter\n	Water based – launch and paddle upstream along the Allegheny River docking along the riverbanks to collect litter\n\nWater based registration is limited to 12 participants total; if you have your own vessel (kayak or canoe)\, we encourage you to bring it. We have 12 available seats in the Friends fleet in a kayak or canoe for those that do not have their own. Previous paddling experience recommended. If you are a beginner or have never paddled before\, please email Ashley Martin at ashley@friendsoftheriverfront.org and we can discuss!
